Are You on LinkedIn? If Not, You Should Be and Here’s Why

With nearly 800 million members across the globe, LinkedIn touts itself as “the world’s largest professional network.” And, we couldn’t agree more. [Source: LinkedIn] When the company first launched in 2003, it served as an online resume. But, today, it’s the premier source for networking, building professional relationships, finding a job, hiring and recruiting. It’s also a great place to share who you are and what your business is all about with people all over the world.

Two Types of Accounts

Personal Accounts

Creating a personal LinkedIn account is the first step on your journey with this social platform. Personal accounts are free and allow you to connect with colleagues, request and provide recommendations, search and view profiles and receive messages. Members who own a business or who might be looking for a new job, should consider upgrading to the premium career plan. For just $40/month, premium members also gain job and application insights, salary and company insights, free learning courses and the ability to see who’s viewed your profile from the last 90 days. This can be cancelled at any time. [Source: LinkedIn

LinkedIn For Business

Creating a business page is very similar to creating a personal profile – there’s basic business accounts and premium accounts. A basic company page is very similar to a personal page where you can share information, connect with potential customers, etc. With a premium business account, you have the same features of a premium career profile. You also have the added bonus of unlimited people browsing and business insights. Similar to platforms like Facebook, you can post articles and other information about your business to your profile feed to garner more engagement from potential customers and employees. A premium business profile is $55.99/month after your seven-day free trial. Tips to Expand Your Reach on LinkedIn

While creating a business or personal profile is great, you’re not going to get the most out of your accounts unless you’re actively sharing content and communicating with your followers. Below are a few things you can do to better optimize your LinkedIn accounts:

  1. Post rich content that’s both timely and relevant.
  2. Share images and videos to increase engagement.
  3. Create LinkedIn polls.
  4. Use hashtags.
  5. Post at least once a week, but ideally once a day.
  6. Utilize LinkedIn live for virtual events or webinars.
  7. Utilize LinkedIn Analytics to learn more about your audience.
  8. If budget allows, use LinkedIn Ads (see below).
