When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, most of us began working from home. While the shift to a remote work lifestyle was a difficult transition, many employers are now seeing the benefits of allowing their employees to work from home. There are dozens of reasons businesses are shifting to work from home, but below are the three most common reasons.

From electricity bills to printer ink, paper, desk supplies and breakroom snacks, overhead costs to keep an office running can easily add up. This is one big reason why businesses are allowing their employees to work from home – it costs them less money. Companies can choose to move to a smaller building, rent a coworking space once a month, or choose to go completely virtual. While there are times when teams will need to gather together to collaborate, there’s no need to have a fully-functioning office 24/7 when everyone on your team is remote the majority of the time. With lower overhead costs, businesses can spend that money on hiring more employees, marketing and other important items.

Like we discussed in a recent blog, offering flexibility to your employees is a great way to make them feel valued. Allowing employees the opportunity to work remotely is the ultimate form of trust. It shows you recognize that your employees are hard-working and can manage their tasks without you looking over their shoulders. Being trusted makes employees happier. Being able to work in their pajamas when it’s raining outside makes them happier. Being able to do laundry on their lunch break or put a casserole in the stove for dinner before the kids get home makes them happier. By allowing employees to work from home, you’re giving them that work-life balance that many so desperately crave.

Also, word will get out that your office has gone remote which, in our current job market, will give you a better reputation. The better your reputation is, the more people want to work for you. It’s an all-around win! 

We recognize that many companies are unable or not a good fit for working from home. For example, it would be quite difficult for nurses, firefighters and teachers to work from the comfort of their own home. But, for those that are able, a remote working lifestyle provides boundless benefits, and we think it’s here to stay!
